LIFE SAVING DONATION | SERVPRO of South Tulsa County’s donated AED gives hope and added safety to Wetumka schools

SERVPRO of South Tulsa County, Edmond and Stillwater/Guthrie installed an AED system at Wetumka Public Schools on June 25th

July 12, 2018
Wetumka officials are reacting with delight to SERVPRO of South Tulsa County, Edmond, and Stillwater/Guthrie’s recently installed AED system at their school.
“Everyone is excited that we are getting started with additional safety” says Wetumka Superintendent Donna McGee of the June 25th installation. “And since the gym has PE classes as well as athletic events, that seemed like a good place to start.”

An AED is a portable electronic device that automatically diagnoses the life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias which lead to sudden cardiac arrest. The AED device treats the conditions through defibrillation, which allows the heart to reestablish an effective rhythm. More importantly AEDs are designed to be used by a layperson through simple audio and visual commands and is taught in many first aid, certified first responder, and basic life support level cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) classes.
The Wetumka AED donation is the second in an ongoing series of donations to area schools in need.
According to McGee the new AED at Wetumka represents a “new level of safety” at the school.
“We didn’t have an AED prior to this and it was mainly because they were cost prohibitive, we wouldn’t be able to have one if it weren’t for Servpro South Tulsa.” she says. “We are planning to purchase five more and place them in the right traffic areas of the school. This really sort of kick started the whole thing.”
The donation began when Servpro Business Development Specialist Brady Deaton came to McGee's office to talk about a catastrophic event plan. "When he did a walkthrough he saw that we were in need and said that they could help us out” she said.
“And now the install has gone off without a hitch and we couldn’t be happier! It was a fast process and they are very easy to work with.”
Deaton says that Servpro was excited to work with Wetumka to make the school a safer environment for students.
”We are really excited to partner with Wetumka schools in making their school a safer place for children” he said“We look forward to working with other schools in Oklahoma to help them do the same, whether it is via an AED donation, emergency plan or just by being there for them in the event of a disaster."
The first SERVPRO donation was given to Mounds school in February; a donation that officials at that school say is serving the school well.
“You hope you never have to use an AED, but it’s a concern that you have” Mounds Superintendent Doran Smith said of the gift. “It’s better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.”
Deaton says that the objective for Servpro is to get the potentially lifesaving technology to as many schools as possible.
“We mainly focus on smaller schools that don’t have AEDs and need them” he says. “Our goal is to help as many schools as we can.”
Currently SERVPRO of South Tulsa plans to give away one AED per quarter. They have franchises in South Tulsa, Stillwater/Guthrie, and Edmond, and service surrounding communities.
